Fair Ground
It is a privilege to have my artwork selected to show as part of this season’s Fair Ground exhibition at Glyndebourne, alongside such talented artists.

“Fair Ground is our annual exhibition of new work by Sussex artists. The title is taken from a musical stanza in Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem Sussex (1902), in which he describes the county as ‘beloved over all’. A hymn to the beauty of the place, Kipling saw his enchantment with Sussex as deeply rooted in an understanding of locality, a belief that the cottages, hedgerows, green rolling hills, seafronts, hidden coves and woodlands were all an integral part of connecting real people to their historical pasts. Each artist shown here brings their contemporary practice into conversation with generations of Sussex artists before them – a kind of visual poetry that traverses land and experience.”
Part of a collection exploring themes of memory, emotion and landscape; and the deep connection and parallels between our inner selves and the shifting energies of natural places, the selected pieces depict my sentimental feeling and memory of the Argyll coast and the desert landscape of Arizona. Tiles are unglazed, slip-decorated stoneware ceramic. Marks and texture were made in wet clay by fingers or hand tools. Layers of custom-coloured slip were applied and scraped back in a kind of sgraffito effect, before a single firing.
